Lunch at illy Cafe Milano at Piazza Gae Aulenti

Pasta al pomodoro con fiocchi di ricotta, melanzane e menta

Just recently the illy Cafe Milano opened at Piazza Gae Aulenti, right in time for EXPO 2015, and I couldn’t resist eating the first Lunch of my #ItalRail15 Trip at the illy Café. When walking to Piazza Gae Aulenti, where illy Cafe Milano is located, just follow the signs to the Train station Porta Garibaldi or, if you’re coming from there, just leave the station and follow the escalators upstairs. The Piazza is due to its skyscrapers not to miss. Right next to Hugo Boss and similar higher priced shops you find the red iconic illy-sign and some tables and chairs outside. It is definitely really nice to sit there outside, but thanks to the always recurring rain showers I had to go inside.

Lunch at illy Cafe Milano

When entering illy Cafe Milano you first arrive at the front desk, where you order and pay on the right side and then pick your order up on the left. But, I didn’t want something for snacks, I wanted to have a proper Italian Lunch, and so I went over to the Restaurant area in the back of the Store.
Luckily a table for two at the window was free and from there I could enjoy a nice view on both old and new houses.

For Lunch I’ve chosen Pasta al Pomodoro con fiocchi di ricotta, melanzane e menta for eight euros and some water. The restaurant wasn’t full yet and so my pasta arrived about 5 minutes after I ordered them. They were still very hot and the first bite was just so Italian and really delicious. Even though some Pasta were a bit too al dente ( = not cooked enough) the combination of tomato sauce, eggplant and mint (!) gave a classic dish a new twist. For dessert, I ordered the Dessert del Giorno, Frolla con crema pasticcera alla vaniglia del Madagascar for four euros and, how obvious at illy, un caffé.

my Review of the Illy Restaurant in Milan

All in all, I can really recommend a visit to illy Café in Milan. Either for eating lunch or dinner or for a snack from the bar. The location is great if you have a bit more time to spend at the train station, to escape the hustle of the station and enjoy your connection time relaxed. At the Café Shop also offer Macarons in different flavours for 1.50 euro each, but I haven’t tried them. And, an espresso is a must, if you pass by Porta Garibaldi by metro or train!
… or visit illy at EXPO 2015 as they are the official coffee partner (and we all know how important coffee is).
