What to expect from Scotch Whisky Experience in Edinburgh

Do you happen to be in Edinburgh and wonder what to expect from Scotch Whisky Experience in Edinburgh? Located just in front of the Gates of Edinburgh Castle you can barely miss this Experience. In this, you learn so much about Scotch Whisky and Whisky in general, and it is far more than just a museum or an exhibition. And at the end of the Tour, you can even taste a complimentary Whisky, and you even get to keep the small crystal whisky tasting glass – to enjoy even more of this golden brew. So if you are interested in local popularities and like alcohol/whisky, you should definitely join a Scotch Whisky Experience in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Walking along The Royal Mile/Castlehill you will find the Scotch Whisky Experience House on the left side while facing Edinburgh Castle in front of you. When I visited on a Saturday afternoon in January there weren’t huge queues, which minimised the waiting time enormously. Depending on how intense you want your Scotch Whisky Experience you can select different types of Tours. Even the basic ‘Silver Tour‘ for £15.00 per Adult includes the tasting of 1 Whisky. It is available all day according to the seasonal opening hours, as below, and every day. If you want more you will find more Info on the other offers on the official website.

After selecting your preferred type of Tour, and paying for it, each two people are placed in whisky barrels to drive through the production of Scotch Whisky. In this Tour, you learn about the process of how Scotch Whisky is made. Even though each distillery has its own unique specifications the steps are Malting, Mashing, Fermentation, Pot Stills, Distillation and Spirit Safe until the mature process of several years starts. If you don’t understand something or have further questions, before starting with the next part of the Tour you can ask the Staff anything, they are super friendly and have good knowledge. In the following part, you are placed in a wide-angle cinema to learn more about the 5 types of Scotch Whisky. Each of those regions has its own distinctive Whisky Flavours and Origins. And before you got to chose which one to try you learn about the process of Blended Whisky, which is a mixture of all the best Scotch Whiskies. I went to try a Lowland Malt Whisky, as they come from the region of Edinburgh. The others to chose from are Highland Malt Whisky, Speyside Malt Whisky, Islay Malt Whisky and a Campbeltown Whisky.

In the Room with the world’s largest collection of Scotch whisky (3,384 bottles!) visitors of the Scotch Whisky Experience, finally, get to taste a Whisky. Kids under the age of 18 will get a glass of Irn Bru, or if you don’t want/like alcohol. As a souvenir, you even get to keep your crystal Glencairn whisky tasting glass! The Tour ends in the ‘Restaurant’, and then later in the Shop, where you can continue to indulge in the various tastes of Scotch Whisky and buy one or two things to bring back home. Besides Whisky Bottles they also sell Whisky Chocolates and more. In total, you should plan about 1 hour for the Silver Tour of the Scotch Whisky Experience in Edinburgh. Even if you are not too familiar with Whisky, especially then, you should take the Tour and learn more about the Scottish distinctive product.
