Besenwirtschaft Osswald in Tettnang near Lake Constance

A Besenwirtschaft is something typical swabian. Often also called Besen (which directly translated means broom), or Rädle or Rädlewirtschaft in the Lake Constance region, is a type of Restaurant where you can enjoy typical regional and mostly hearty meals. One of the best ones is Besenwirtschaft Osswald in Tettnang near Lake Constance. In between hopyards and Apple orchards you can find them, located in the so-called middle of the nature. Onsite parking for Cars is available, but you can also come by bicycle (it’s quite hilly but with great views).
The menu isn’t very extensive like in regular restaurants, but that’s just what a Besenwirtschaft is about. Often they don’t even need to have bathrooms and by law they are, in Germany, allowed to open for a maximum of 4 months per year. The food they offer should be sold where it’s produced – so yes, you’re often eating in the same house the farmers live and work, what is very authentic and creates a great atmosphere – and the food is meant to be simple.

An insider’s tip at Besenwirtschaft Osswald in Tettnang near Lake Constance are their Dinnete. Dinnete is similar to the Alsatian/French-origin Tarte flambée or the swiss Wähe, but it’s also a synonym for a a swabian pizza. I ordered mine with potatoes and cream, leeks, cheese (and without ham). Traditionally Dinnete is made out of yeast dough and is topped, with a thick crust, with cream, often with bacon and onions, sometimes with potatoes and as a sweet version with apples. What’s also typical swabian is the Wurstsalat that consits of thin sliced sausage, often Lyon, with a vinegar-oil marinade and onions. The swiss version, swiss wurstsalat, additional has some cheese pieces. To see what else they offer I’ve included pictures of their menu below.

Even though there were a lot people there the food didn’t take too long and what was the Potato Dinnete by Besenwirtschaft Osswald delicious! Normally they are rather small (like 1/3 of this size), but I was so happy about the pizza-size as it was very good. and I even ate the complete thing, by myself. Later I also ordered the Apfelküchle, apple fritters with whipped cream and vanilla ice-cream. How could it be otherwise, they were also very tasty.

As in the end the food and drinks were quite inexpensive, and just so good, I’ll definitely eat there again as soon as they open again.
