Cabo da Roca to Lisbon Roadtrip in Portugal

Cabo da Roca to Lisboa Roadtrip in Portugal

Did you know that the most western Point of Europe is in Portugal, even near Lisbon? Cabo da Roca is the westernmost extent of mainland Portugal and continental Europe. It’s located 42 km west of Lisbon and it’s a great Roadtrip to do if you are in this area, and with a Car. The Route is not too long and you pass some pretty Places with a View, on the Ocean and the countryside.

Cabo da Roca, the most western point in Europe, is definitely a Tourist Attraction. It was not as overflown as I guessed when I visited. The Climate in Fall and winter is often above 10 / 15 degrees. Though this is often visited my Surfers as the winds can be really good, for them, what I experienced at the Cape. There are paved paths above the cliffs and it was so damn windy when I visited, once I even had to reach for a handrail. Some of the Cliffs are more than 100 meters in height. The view is undoubtedly nice, nothing else than water in sight. A big monument shares also the exact location, it’s 38°47′N 9°30′W.

Let’s start the Roadtrip at the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park where Cabo da Roca, or Cape Roca, is located. The area of this Natural Park is approximately 145 km² and it’s one of 13 Natural Parks in in Portugal. With many historical and natural sites, the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park is popular among tourists. There is a Road, from Cabo da Roca to Lisbon, that is located almost completely at the Oceans and Beaches. I can recommend this one, but you can also choose the motorway A5, but, you need to pay for the motorways in Portugal. During my drive along the beach-route I often stopped the Car to take Photos and enjoy the nature. The sound of the waves, the salty smell in the Air, the sound of birds in the Air. As it is just around 40 km from Cabo da Roca to Lisbon you can reach it within an hour by Car. And before parking, I did some Sightseeing-by-Car in Lisbon. A big benefit was the panoramic-window in the Opel ADAM. It allowed me to watch the higher buildings, and even to take pictures of them through it. Plus, the Car is rather short and it’s easier to find parking spots to squeeze it in. After passing some of the iconic yellow Trams I ended my Roadtrip in the Lisbon District Alfama. From there you have a view on the iconic red 25 de Abril Bridge (Ponte 25 de Abril).

Have you ever been to Cabo da Roca near Lisbon?
