Exploring Bratislava with “Castle & Old Town Tour” by Bratislava Free Tour

Bratislava faced a heavy float on February 5th, 1850, parts of the Castle were burnt down by Italians and ‘Ahoj’ is the Slovakian equivalent to ‘Hi!’. During the “Castle & Old Town Tour” by Bratislava Free Tour I learnt so much about Bratislava and Slovakian culture, I almost could not handle it. Almost, but I definitely enjoyed it! Bratislava Free Tours is not just a name, the guided tours around the city are actually free. Free of charge and free for everyone to join, without any prior bookings. The Guides are locals, the Tours in English language and you pay them in Tips afterwards. Super uncomplicated and so worth it.

Every day at 10 am the “Castle & Old Town Tour” by Bratislava Free Tour is held, and starts at 10 am in the city centre. The meeting point is at the Hviezdoslav Statue, right in front the Radisson Hotel at Hviezdoslavovo námestie street. Upon arrival you can fill out a paper with your E-Mail address to receive the Group Picture, that will be taken later. However, now 3 days since the Tour I haven’t received it, yet. Surprisingly, the size of the group was quite big, with something around 30 people. Parents with their kids, many solo travellers and also couples from younger to older age. Everyone is interested in Bratislava.

The advantage of this Tour by Bratislava Free Tour is that you will cover the Castle and the old town, with the ‘Original Walking Tour’ mainly covering the old town. Especially now in summer, with temperatures around 30 degrees even before the midday clock bells ring, it can be a bit tough. (If you need ice cream recommendations for Bratislava) 2.5 hours of walking, climbing the stairs up to the castle and back again. According to the step-count on my phone, we walked about 6.5 km in those 2.5 hours. Luckily this tour started in the morning at 10 am, when it was still not too hot.

Simona, the Guide of my Bratislava Free Tour, was so charming! Currently doing the Tour on a daily basis, she still shares all the knowledge tireless and with so many anecdotes and little jokes. Simona knows everything about Bratislava and even introduced us to the culture of Slovakia. Have you ever heard about the Easter traditions in Slovakia? Or where to try alcohol with 70%? Or why so many car manufacturers are producing their cars in Slovakia? Or have you ever seen a house that is just 1.3 m wide, aka the ‘Narrowest House in Europe’? I can definitely recommend going on a Free Guided Tour in Bratislava. And, just in case, you can always leave the Tour if you don’t like it.
