Maultaschen are a staple in southern German Cuisine. Year Round people enjoy those filled noodle pockets, in different variations. Find here the Recipe for Maultaschen with Salad / potato salad – Maultaschen mit Salat / Kartoffelsalat. You might also want to check out the Blogpost about German Maultaschen, learn about how they have been invented, and a total of three different types of preparation.

Ingredients

  • 2 Maultaschen of your choice (meat, veggie, cream cheese,…)
  • 2 Shallots
  • pinch of flour for frying
  • 2 tsp butter or vegetable oil for frying
  • favorable ingredients for a mixed salad (leaf salad, tomato, cucumber, olives, potato salad,…)

Preparation

Fry. First off, you prepare the fried onions. Personally I like to prepare them ahead, and the Maultaschen afterwards in the same pan. If you are time conscious, you can use two pans at the same time. For the fried onions, add a tsp of butter into a pan and fry it up.
Now cut your onion of choice, I went for Shallots, into half a centimeter slices, and bread them in a pinch of flour. Add them to the hot oil, move them occasionally until they are browned from every side. Remove from the pan and pat them dry on kitchen paper.

Mix. In the meantime, prepare your mixed salad of choice. Traditionally, you can serve nothing else than potato salad with a vinegar-oil dressing. A mixed salad with a good dressing will give the fried up Maultaschen a nice, acidy, addition. You can either use whatever you have in your fridge, or use the classics: leaf salad such as iceberg, tomatoes, olives, cucumber, carrots, potato salad,…
To accompany the hearty fried shallots and fried Maultaschen, I added an acidy dressing on top of the mixed salad. You can find a recipe for Yoghurt Honey Dressing here.

Fry again. Once you have removed the fried shallots from your pan, or you are using two at the same time, add another tsp of butter or vegetable oil of our choice to your pan on medium to high heat and add the (store-bought) Maultaschen. As the big Maultaschen have only two sides, the one up and the one down, frying will be quick. Make sure every side is nicely browned, and crispy. Once you have achieved this, you are ready to serve your crispy german Maultaschen with fried onions and Salad.
