Roman Forum in Rome in the Winter Season

Bad weather might eventually turn some cities into ugly creatures, but not Rome. Rome is always nice. May the sun shine like crazy or let it rain, hail or even snow. Cloudy sky, raindrops now and then and places gain a certain magic. While visiting the Roman Forum in Rome in the Winter Season made me experience exactly this. While the weather was still okay at the Colosseum, it got more and more mystic once I walked the few metres over to the Roman Forum, or Forum Romanum in Latin, or Foro Romano in Italian.

An ancient open-air Town in the middle of the City of Rome, this is the Roman Forum. One of the most important archaeological sites of ancient Rome. The visitable archaeological site is in a valley between the three urban hills Capitol, Palatine and Esquiline and was the site of many public buildings and monuments. Nowadays the Forum is as popular with Tourists as it was back in the day starting from nearly 2000 years ago. The Forum Romanum, as we see the remains nowadays, was not directly an intact city that was once built altogether. From Via Sacra the first monument I saw was the 15m high Arch of Titus/Arco di Tito, the oldest preserved triumphal arch of the ancient city. In a City like Rome, where e v e r y t h i n g is ancient and has played a role in history, being the oldest one definitely means something! If you have mobile internet in Italy I highly recommend checking out Google Maps as all the monuments and buildings are also on Google Maps. The next thing was to gain height, and so I climbed parts of the Palatine Hill/Collina del Palatino. If you are planning on visiting Sights in Rome during the Winter Season it’s highly recommended to check the opening hours as they are shorter compared to the long summer days. Now in the beginning of February, the last possible entry was by 3:30 pm and the Roman Forum ultimately closed at 4:30 pm.
