Sicilian street food in Palermo at Rasca Palermo

Rasca Palermo

“Rasca. Sicilian Street Food.” is the claim by Rasca, a snack bar right next to Politeama in the lively city centre. Rasca Palermo brings back the gastronomic tradition of Sicilian street food, actually something you can’t find omnipresent in Palermo anymore. The location of the snack bar couldn’t be better at Piazza Ruggero Settimo, as you can easily access it. Slightly bigger than a “hole in the wall” they offer everything the Sicilian cuisine offers as street food, from Milz in a bread roll (“Pane con la milza”), Panzerotti (“a small calzone”) to fried potato croquettes and stuffed aubergine rolls. Snacks for on the go, to accompany the typical Italian aperitivo or a meal, Sicilian street food offers something for everyone.

The Sicilian street food menu at RASCA Palermo

After checking out parts of their menu online, there are just examples and no full menu available, I actually wanted to order a “Panini Gourmet” at Rasca Palermo first. This bread roll made from ancient Sicilian hard grains is topped with fresh smoked Provola, Rascatura, Eggplant and Mint. However, I went to a more typical Sicilian street food instead, Panelle & Crocchette. For just 3€ I got a mixed paper cone of potato croquettes and chickpea bits, all individually and freshly fried. As my B&B was just around the corner, I ordered my Sicilian street food for takeaway and got it in a paper bag. Unfortunately, I squeezed the fried goods a bit in my shopping bag and was greeted by one big mash as soon as I opened the bag again. Oops! But actually, it was one big oily mash. I don’t know if it was because of how I carried the Panelle & Crocchette, or if they weren’t drained enough after they came out the hot oil, but it was just super oily, leaking everywhere. The chickpea-based Panelle were soggy and far from crispy (I don’t know if it’s meant to be like this?) and the croquettes dissolved and transformed into potato mash. But a delicious mash! I actually already had a packed Salad on the side and enjoyed the well-flavoured potato mash as my only side dish for this salad, and it was delicious!

Rasca Palermo just opened back in November 2017 and after my not ideal first order I should have definitely gone back to try something else, but there are just so many specialities to try in Palermo, I’ll soon write about all the other gastronomic highlights I encountered during my trip to Sicily.
