Travel Diary: 1 hour in Rapallo, Liguria

Rapallo, Liguria

Unfairly towards Rapallo, I haven’t spent much time there as I’ve used this smaller seaside town in north-western Italy to board a Boat to Portofino only. Rapallo is situated in Liguria, on the Tigullio Gulf, and is located in between Portofino and Chiavari. As usually in towns with harbours most of the time happens close to the water, where most shops and restaurants are located. And so it is in Rapallo, which by the way is quite famous for its mild climate, even in the colder winter months. Due to the villas and houses built in the hills above and behind Rapallo, that is protecting the city from the cold northern winds, they are making it an ideal place for many Italians as a winter residence.

As a famous landmark, you find the Castello sul Mare prominently located at the harbour. This Castle-on-the-Sea was built to defend the village after several attacks by the Ottomans and Barbary pirates in the 16th century. It even includes a small chapel dedicated to Saint Cajetan, built in 1688. After strolling around the harbour area I enjoyed some typical Italian tomato-mozzarella Bruschetta in some smaller alley, before walking back and being on time for my Boat to Portofino, where I spent little more time than in Rapallo. I’ll soon share more about the Boat Ride, stay tuned and follow me on Instagram to stay up-to-date with new Posts!

If you are planning to visit Rapallo in north-western Italy, there are a few sights you should definitely see. As already mentioned you can’t miss the Castello sul Mare located at the Harbor. Other buildings are the Castello di Punta Pagana, the historical Tower of the Fieschi and the Torre Civica, the Porta delle Saline and the “church of St. Francis of Assisi“, the Sanctuary of Nostra Signora di Montallegro and the ruined Monastery of Valle Christi from the 13th century.
