A visit to Adelaide Botanic Garden in late summer

The Adelaide Botanical Garden is one of Australia’s most beautiful attractions and sights. Throughout the year you can experience the local fauna and learn about it. It is, of course, the best in spring and summer, when everything is blooming and fresh. Back in May, when I visited, it is already late summer/ autumn in Australia. Therefore many plants and flowers were already burned out and prepared themselves for the early winter with cooler temperatures.

Nevertheless, it is worth to visit Adelaide Botanic Garden. There are some free-roaming birds in a meadow, but unfortunately, they had no name signs around their necks explaining their breed, different than the flowers. In a glasshouse, the Adelaide Botanic Garden Amazon Waterlily Pavillon, one can observe different kinds of water lilies. The Garden is open to the public daily until sunset, the exact times, as well as further information, can also be found online.

For the very first time, the Adelaide Botanic Garden was opened in 1857. The actual plans began two years before, under the direction of George Francis (1800-1865), an English botanical and general science writer. In the following centuries, they opened the Water Lily House, the Palm House, the Schomburgk Pavilion and the International Rose Garden. The latest attraction is the Little Sprouts Kitchen Garden with a unique program for children.
Even if you are not very interested in plants and fauna, I still find it exciting to find out how everything is like in a foreign country. What is similar and what is totally different. Personally and in general this includes not only the organisation of events or local food but also what other animals and even plants exist in other parts of the earth. As I’m not a colossal plant-geek, I discovered a few kinds that I believe I haven’t seen before, but mainly I found some birds that I haven’t seen before in Europe (I guess…).
