Prepare to be captivated by the Calcio Storico Fiorentino, one of Florence’s most unique and historic folkloric events, often dubbed “calcio in costume.” This ancient sport, a captivating blend of football, rugby, and wrestling, sees teams from the city’s four historic districts battle it out on a sand-covered pitch. Witness intense action as 27 “calcianti” from each team compete to score by getting the ball into the opponent’s net.
A Centuries-Old Tradition
Known also as “calcio in livrea” or “calcio in costume,” this intense game dates back to the 16th century, originally played to entertain Florence’s wealthy elite. Four teams, each comprising 27 formidable players from the city’s historic districts – the Bianchi of Santo Spirito, the Azzurri of Santa Croce, the Rossi of Santa Maria Novella, and the Verdi of San Giovanni – battle it out on a sand-covered pitch. Their objective is to score a “caccia” by placing the ball into the opponent’s net during a fierce 50-minute match. The winning team receives a Chianina calf as their prize.
Calcio Storico Fiorentino: Event Details
The Calcio Storico Fiorentino dates back to the 16th century, originally played for the Florentine elite. The four teams — the Bianchi of Santo Spirito, the Azzurri of Santa Croce, the Rossi of Santa Maria Novella, and the Verdi of San Giovanni — fiercely contest two semi-finals and a grand final. Each match lasts approximately fifty minutes, with the winning team receiving a Chianina calf as their prize.
2025 Fixtures & Location
All three matches take place in the historic Piazza di Santa Croce in Florence. The semi-finals are scheduled for Saturday, 14th June and Sunday, 15th June 2025. The highly anticipated final will be held on Tuesday, 24th June 2025, coinciding with the Feast of Saint John, Florence’s patron saint. This day culminates in a magnificent historical parade through the city centre and a spectacular fireworks display from Piazzale Michelangelo in the evening. Matches begin at 6:00 PM.
