On the evening of Monday, 16th June 2025, the historic city of Pisa, Italy, will once again be transformed by the enchanting La Luminara di San Ranieri. This beloved folklore tradition sees the Lungarni (riversides) of Pisa illuminated by thousands of flickering wax lights, creating an unforgettable magical atmosphere. It’s an annual celebration where Pisans honour their patron saint, San Ranieri, on the eve of his feast day.
Approximately seventy thousand meticulously placed wax lights, housed in smooth glass cups, are arranged within white-painted wooden frames. These frames are custom-modelled to enhance the architectural beauty of the palaces, bridges, churches, and towers lining the River Arno. The iconic Leaning Tower of Pisa receives a unique illumination from oil lamps, also placed along the battlements of the city walls enclosing the Piazza dei Miracoli. Adding to the charm, numerous floating lights are cast upon the waters of the Arno, carried gently by the current.
The tradition of the Luminara dates back to 25th March 1688, commemorating the solemn placement of the body of San Ranieri degli Scaccieri, the city’s patron, in Pisa Cathedral. This event sparked a memorable city-wide celebration, evolving into the unique illumination spectacle known today as the Luminara. Don’t miss this truly captivating experience.
