Prepare to be captivated by the Palio di Siena, Italy’s most celebrated historic horse race and folkloric re-enactment. Boasting centuries-old origins, this iconic event transforms Siena’s magnificent Piazza del Campo, the city’s main medieval square, into a vibrant arena twice a year. Mark your calendars for 2nd July, featuring the Palio della Madonna di Provenzano, and 16th August for the Palio dell’Assunta.
More than just a race, the Palio is a profound passion and integral part of Sienese life. Each edition unfolds over four enthralling days, from 29th June leading to the 2nd July race, and again from 13th to 16th August. The event embodies centuries of rivalry between the city’s seventeen districts, known as “contrade,” to which every Sienese person belongs. The coveted prize, the “Drappellone,” is a large, beautifully painted silk canvas, uniquely designed by a different artist each year.
The Palio itself is a breathtaking dash consisting of three intense laps around Piazza del Campo, on a track specially prepared with sand and “tufo.” Ten horses and their bareback jockeys, representing competing contrade, await the start at the ‘Mossa’. The victorious horse, whether its jockey remains mounted or not, is the first to complete the three circuits, bringing immense pride and celebration to its district.
