Immerse yourself in centuries of history and devotion at the Corteggio Storico di Prato, an annual celebration held on 8th September in Prato, Tuscany. This magnificent event commemorates the Nativity of the Madonna and the display of the Sacred Girdle (Sacra Cintola), a revered relic housed within Prato Cathedral’s chapel. Dating back over eight centuries, this deeply rooted tradition combines solemn religious rites with vibrant civil festivities, captivating locals and visitors alike.
The day begins with the symbolic “Delivery of the Prato Municipality’s Candles” ceremony on the Cathedral square. As the day unfolds, the city centre comes alive with street performances and various collateral events, offering a rich tapestry of local culture. The highlight of the evening is the Corteggio Storico itself, a grand historical parade featuring over five hundred costumed participants. Led by the City Armed Guard and Municipal Valets, the procession, marked by the Gonfalone (banner) of Prato emerging from the Palazzo Comunale, winds its way through the city to the Duomo’s forecourt for the sacred Ostensione ritual.
