Käsespätzle, what else to eat in southern Germany? This dish made with egg noodles, plenty of cheese and onions, is a staple in the southern German cuisine. A traditional restaurant not offering Käsespätzle should definitely be avoided. In Tübingen, a City just a bit south of Stuttgart, you have plenty of options for both modern as well as traditional cuisine. In the research for a restaurant in a nice location, I went with Gasthausbrauerei Neckarmüller right by the river close to the old town. Enchanting yet unique interior, floor to ceiling windows and typical German dishes, Gasthausbrauerei Neckarmüller should definitely be your place to go when visiting Tübingen. There is plenty to see and do in Tübingen, so at least one proper meal should be on your agenda for the trip.
My proper meal in Tübingen has been cheese spätzle with shredded cheese, steamed onions and a side salad, all for a price of 12,20€ for the full portion. As Käsespätzle are undoubtful a very heavy meal, I ordered a small portion and didn’t even finish it. Yet, it was very good, creamy but not overly cheesy, however, it was just too much. Another dish at Gasthausbrauerei Neckarmüller Tübingen I can recommend is the homemade pretzel dumplings with champignon-herb cream sauce and a side salad (full portion for 11,20€). Other vegetarian, meat-free, options are vegetable ravioli (“Maultaschen”), fried potato rösti with Mediterranean vegetables or baked rösti with cheese. Even though the German cuisine is dominated by meat, mainly pork or beef, there are plenty of meat-free options available. And they are no less tasty than the meat dishes. I can definitely recommend Gasthausbrauerei Neckarmüller Tübingen. Due to the great food, friendly and fast service, as well as due to the convenient location right by the river Neckar.
