Travelling through Italy by train is an experience in itself, combining convenience, speed, and the opportunity to soak in the country’s picturesque landscapes. My recent journey aboard an InterCity (IC) train from Rimini to Bologna offered exactly that, with a touch of classic first-class charm. Though the trip lasted just 1 hour and 13 minutes, it was a memorable and enjoyable experience—one I’d recommend to fellow travellers, especially those travelling solo.

The Train and Fare Details
The IC train between Rimini and Bologna is a staple of Italian rail travel, connecting two vibrant cities in the Emilia-Romagna region. For this trip, I opted for a first-class ticket, which cost a reasonable €21. Considering the comfort and experience provided, it was excellent value for money. If you want to rather invest your money in delicious gelato, of course the 2nd class onboard the InterCity Trains by Trenitalia is still recommended; but of course more crowded.
The First-Class Experience
The highlight of my journey was undoubtedly the six-seat first-class compartment. Unlike modern open-plan train carriages, these compartments evoke a sense of old-world elegance, with a private door that separates you from the main corridor. Inside, the padded, spring-cushioned seats were both comfortable and spacious, perfect for relaxing during the short journey.
What truly set this experience apart was the sense of privacy and convenience. Travelling solo, I appreciated the small size of the compartment, which felt more personal and less crowded. With only six seats, the space remained peaceful, and it was easy to settle in and unwind.
Another practical benefit was the luggage storage. I could stow my bag directly on the overhead shelf above my seat, keeping it within sight at all times. This is a significant advantage, especially for solo travellers who may be concerned about their belongings on a busy train.
Scenic Views and a Smooth Ride
The route between Rimini and Bologna takes you through the rolling countryside of Emilia-Romagna, dotted with vineyards, quaint villages, and patches of farmland. The large windows of the first-class compartment provided an excellent vantage point to take in these views.
The train itself offered a smooth and quiet ride, enhanced by the gentle sway of the spring-supported seats. It felt almost luxurious to sit back, enjoy the scenery, and let the world slip by for just over an hour.
Why I recommend taking the train from Rimini to Bologna and vice versa
While the journey is relatively short, the first-class experience makes it feel special. If you’re travelling alone, the smaller compartment offers a greater sense of security and comfort. The ability to keep your luggage close is another significant plus, removing some of the stress often associated with train travel.
At €21, the ticket price felt more than justified by the added comfort, privacy, and ease of travel. This journey would also suit couples or small groups looking for a quiet and intimate setting on board.
For me, this short but delightful ride was a reminder of how rewarding train travel can be. Next time you find yourself planning a trip through Italy, consider upgrading to first class for an experience that’s both practical and enjoyable.
