In 1788 the Strumpfarhaus was built as a family home. After being inherited by the last member of this family nowadays this building houses the local history museum, in the heart of Oberstaufen. Volunteers have collected hundreds of pieces that demonstrate how the rural life in the past 200 years looked like. From the outside, the main house looks so charming, with red flowers below the windows but wow, inside it is so spacious. One room after another, one level after another, all perfectly curated by specific themes. The family living room, bedroom, a room with toys for children, a workshop, utensils for cheese production (for what the Allgäu is famous for) and so much more.
Life was hard back then, but work even harder. Diseases were common, and this is also one reason why, for example, the beds were all so small. Besides humans being smaller, and not needing beds that were 2 meters long, one reason was that people slept rather sitting than lying down. With respiratory disease, bad lung conditions, in general, it was recommended to sleep upright for better breathing. Due to this, and to save money on wood, beds were this tiny.
This was just not so long ago, and people were definitely not dumb or uneducated. With no television or the internet in any mind, it seemed everyone had inventory spirit.
The admission is 3 Euros per person, with the local guest card 2,50€ or free with the Oberstaufen PLUS card.
