Stay overnight in a building designated as a cultural monument, in a perfect location directly at Hamburg’s main train station. And on top of that, stay overnight in Hamburg at a reasonable price. So many advantages, what’s the catch with staying at Generator Hostel? Well, the rooms themselves. But, the house, located on the corner of Kirchenallee/Steintorplatz/Steintorweg, is more than steeped in history.
The so-called Klockmannhaus was once built in the year 1870 in the neoclassical architectural style. Not too much of the original house is left nowadays, it was once raised to a total of eight stories in the last century, and thus became one of the first high-rise buildings in Hamburg. But the building’s eventful history does not end there. Over the years, the building housed a recording studio where none other than perhaps the world’s most famous band, The Beatles, recorded songs. Exactly it is Summertime, Fever and September Song. And nowadays, you can stay in the same building for a reasonable price. What an honour… But is an overnight stay in the Generator Hostel really an honour? You might also want to check out my recommendations for Hotels in Hamburg and Restaurants in Hamburg.
With my overnight stay in a private double room, you can almost no longer speak of a “hostel overnight stay in Hamburg”, because it is a mix of hostel and hotel. The amenities and privacy of a hotel room, coupled with the loudness, clutter and liveliness of a hostel. During my stay, check-in took an incredibly long time as there was no orderly queuing and the walls seemed cardboard thin which did not guarantee a comfortable night’s sleep. All in all, I can recommend the Generator Hostel in Hamburg mainly from the outside as an architectural eye-catcher, or if you really have no other way to stay cheap in Hamburg.
