Experience with Deutsche Bahn ICE Bordbistro in 2024
If it is your first time on board a Deutsche Bahn ICE train, you might want to consider this. Just my personal experience on board an ICE Train from Stuttgart to Paris.
Before the train ride, I was actually quite excited to indulge in their new Menu on board Deutsche Bahn Trains in Germany (ICE Bordgastronomie / dining car). So many new options and a hot cup of coffee is anyways always appreciated. So, of course, I did barely bring any snacks and drinks on board. The train started the journey in Stuttgart, so I was sure there would be plenty of options on board. It was also heading to Paris, the French capital. The Deutsche Bahn must shine on this route, as it’s a well-frequented route.
But nothing. Absolutely nothing fulfilled my desires regarding the Food & drink options on this Deutsche Bahn ICE train. They offered: nothing. Well, basically nothing. Luckily, I went there early on in the journey, so the lady in front of me purchased the final bag of crisps and I already heard from the many angry customers in front that no hot drinks are offered. But also, no food except some lousy sandwiches. Thankfully they still had some cold drinks and a very sparse selection of chocolate bars. I’m pretty sure the ICE Bordgastronomie / dining car closed pretty soon, as they had nothing left.
What a bummer and what an experience!
Let this be an example for you: be grateful if the ICE Bordgastronomie is open and happy to serve you, but be prepared and bring some emergency drinks and snacks in case they run out of everything! Now on to what can be offered on a regular Deutsche Bahn ICE journey.

Where to eat / how to order at ICE Bordgastronomie
If it is your first time aboard a German InterCityExpress Train by Deutsche Bahn, the important information first: you are allowed to eat anywhere on the train. Enjoying your cup of coffee or Currywurst is not limited to the dining car, you can also enjoy it on your own (reserved) seat. If you are travelling in first class, you get to enjoy an at-seat service, usually (depending on the route). In the second class, you have to get up yourself to the ICE Bordgastronomie to order. No matter if you are travelling in first or second class, you can always enjoy the food in the Bordgastronomie or Bordbisto (a smaller version without tables and benches to sit but standing tables), or at your seat. But eating at the dining car is based upon availability, seats or tables there cannot be reserved.
