Gault Millau is a Restaurant Rating system to define the quality of Food. The Organic Restaurant at Castle Wartegg in Rorschacherberg near Lake Constance in the Canton St. Gallen currently has one toque and 13 points. During my one-night stay at the Castle Hotel overlooking beautiful Lake Constance, I got to enjoy their Organic Restaurant in Rorschach / Rorschacherberg three times, for Dinner, Breakfast and Lunch. The most memorable was Dinner for me, as the atmosphere was so special. Enjoying delicious food while watching the sunset being followed by pink skies as seen from the terrace surrounded by pure nature and the Lake in near sight. Besides Hotel Guests and for Events, the Restaurant is open to the public, daily. Due to its popularity, I would recommend making a reservation beforehand.
Dining at the Restaurant at Castle Wartegg
With professional service, amazing food styling and exploding taste buds, the Restaurant at Castle Wartegg near Lake Constance in Switzerland did not disappoint. Something I think that should be highlighted more is that the Hotel, and the Restaurant, are both following organic standards. Additionally, most products are sourced regionally or even just from a few meters in distance, like the wine they have from Winery Roman Rutishauser, which is exactly 3.7 km away. For both Dinner and Lunch, we had a set Menu, each with options for meat/fish and meat-free. So great when you do not always have to ask for vegetarian options!
Review of Dinner and Lunch at the Castle Hotel Wartegg Restaurant
The multi-course dinner started off with a basket of fresh slices of bread with 4 dips and condiments. My personal favourite was the pear butter which tasted sweet-ish (not too much) and is just perfect for summer. Soon the greeting from the kitchen was brought to our table, a vegetable soup (can’t remember what it was exactly), just before the starter, a mozzarella salad with smoked tofu and melon, arrived. I have never had a combination of melon, mozzarella and tofu, and the 3 balsamic drops just fitted perfectly. For the main course, I had the vegetarian option, homemade Pappardelle with dried tomatoes and Castle-Basil. At first, this might not sound too fancy, but wow, the Pasta was so good! Tasty thickness, a tiny bit over al dente, with a light sauce, also a nice dish for summer. For dessert, you could either have both, or choose between a raspberry mousse with mascarpone, raspberry ice cream and mint, or a mixed cheese platter. As Restaurant Castle Wartegg in Rorschach is located in Switzerland I, of course, opted for the cheese. What better country to eat cheese in, than Switzerland? The plate was reasonably sized and as everything tasted so good, I ate all of the Appenzeller, Brie, warm Pear Tarte, another harder cheese and pear chutney. To end the evening, we had another amuse-bouche, this time a tiny sweet sorbet.
Everything was accompanied by a Sauvignon Blanc white wine from 2015, from the winery that is just around the corner.
After this first great dining experience at the organic restaurant, I was thrilled to enjoy even more for Lunch. Again, we had a set menu, consisting of just three courses this time. For the starter, we had a leaf salad with radishes and roasted pine nuts or Lettuce from the castle garden with French dressing. The main course was the only dish that did not fit my taste at all, Dhal with almond rice and coriander. Luckily the dessert was just perfect again, a homemade chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream.
