Universe-Watching at Stuttgart Observatory

Stuttgart Observatory

Sternwarte Stuttgart (Stuttgart Observatory) is an astronomical observatory located in Stuttgart in southern Germany. It’s built on a hill that is still in the middle of town, on the Uhlandshöhe. From there you have a great view all over Stuttgart plus it’s also a place for young people to hang out (and drink) in the late evening hours. And that’s exactly the time you are visiting the Observatory because you get the best view on the universe and the stars and planets when it’s dark. The whole “Show” that is offered by the association that runs the observatory starts each at 10 pm on five days a week, and with a clear sky only.

When I went to Stuttgart and with the plan to visit the Observatory the sky was a bit cloudy so I wasn’t sure if it’s really open. But even though it’s not that far from the main train station we took a taxi that like took us through half the city, even though I still believe it could have been one of the only ways up there.. If you are going to Uhlandshöhe, you definitely should do it for sunset or sunrise as the view is just stunning from there.

But back to the Observatory which was built in 1921 and that is by the way the oldest one in whole Germany! In total the Stuttgart Observatory is equipped with a total of six telescopes. Four of them are permanently mounted and two other ones are mobile and are installed on the terrace outside. A visit costs only 4 euros per adult and it’s totally fair in order for the deep information you’ll receive. And yes, for sure you can watch planets by yourself as well. Unfortunately it was a bit cloudy when I visited it so we couldn’t see all the possible planets, but in the beginning I got a first short view on one (I think it was mercury) and it was very incredible to see it that close. Even to me, as I’m not very much interested in Planets and what’s outside our Galaxy (do I even what to know that?) It was very interesting to hear and learn about it and remember one or two things that I once learned years ago in school.
Stuttgart Observatory is definitely worth every visit (and another cool kind of evening activity)!
