Käsknöpfle, with apple sauce, is a real speciality of Vorarlberg cuisine. This delicacy is available in Bregenz in the Wirtshaus am See, but apple sauce is optional. Located directly by the shores of Lake Constance, Wirtshaus am See with its numerous seats inside, as well as directly by the small harbour, is more than popular. With locals and, of course, especially with tourists. Sitting just a few meters from the Lake, partially even with a view of the famous Bregenzer Festspiele festival stage (currently with the Rigoletto head). Wirtshaus am See offers breakfast, lunch, desserts and dinner, every day.

On a warm September noon, of course, the pleasant weather had to be used, the last available table in the outer first row was more than convenient. From around 12:30 p.m. the restaurant began to quickly fill up, so it is recommended to arrive early or to reserve in advance. When in Vorarlberg, you have to eat Käsknöpfle. A local tradition is to enjoy them with sweet apple sauce – definitely recommend! According to the menu, these homemade cheese knobs are served with fried onions and a colourful mixed salad bowl. The price for a portion is 14.90 euros. You can also order s additional serving of apple sauce for an extra 2.90 euros. My companion opted for the pumpkin foam soup with roasted pumpkin seeds and pumpkin seed oil pearls for 5.90 euros and a garlic bread au gratin for 2.90 euros. Except for the very crispy bread roll with herbs/garlic topping, all the dishes were extremely tasty, but the unique location alone already makes the Wirtshaus am See in Bregenz more than recommendable.
