Saint Mark’s Square in Venice

One of the main tourist attractions in Venice Italy is Saint Mark’s Square. The fact that Saint Mark’s Square is the only real square in Venice, the floating City, makes it even more special. Sure, other smaller places have free space, but the biggest one is definitely Saint Mark’s Square or Piazza San Marco in Italian.

Gondolas and waterborne stops at Saint Mark’s Square in Venice and sometimes even big Cruise Ships, how surreal it sounds and indeed looks! Along the Square are some of the most beautiful buildings in Venice, such as the Doge’s Palace. The Venetian Republic was once ruled by this enchanting example of a floral Gothic style Building, making it the highest expression of Venetian art. Right next to it, and close to my Lunch spot Rossopomodoro in Venice, there is the Saint Mark’s Basilica. It’s a great example of Byzantine Venetian architecture. It was the Doge’s Chapel and also the mausoleum for Saint Mark, the patron saint, whose life is narrated in the golden mosaics on the walls. Not to miss is the Clocktower that was built in 1810 by architect Giuseppe Soli. the clocktower is at the start of the Merceria, the road that leads from Saint Mark’s Square to the Campo di San Bartolomeo. At any time you can find some thousands of pigeons in the square. Either walking around or flying closely over people’s heads. There are also many Souvenir Shops selling the usual stuff, from ‘Venetian Masks‘ to Postcards and Selfie Sticks. Saint Mark’s Square in Venice is also very expensive if you visit a Restaurant or Café there, make sure to pay more than 15 € for a simple Espresso there. If you have scored a nice Place outside at least your View will be worth it. A visit to Venice will be absolutely worth it.
