This renaissance building of the 14th century is nowadays a pilgrimage site for everyone enthusiastic about the novel Romeo & Juliet, maybe even for the ones unhappy in Love, or just for all tourists and visitors to Verona. To me, it really has been a mandatory visit to Casa di Giulietta Verona. It’s just the thing to see in the romantic city.
But the house is so much more than just a tourist attraction, even though “the real Juliet” never lived in there, nor William Shakespeare has any close connections to the building. But, you can not only visit the courtyard, which is typically very crowded, you can also visit the inside of the house. The four-story building displays ancient memorabilia, like a historic bed or examples of how males and females dressed back then, you will also gain access to the famous balcony on the first floor. “Juliet’s balcony” is not original, as the house is already more than 500 years old, as it was only installed in the past century.
Besides standing on the balcony and waving to the crowds, another popular activity at Casa di Giulietta Verona is to rub the breast of the bronze statue of Juliet. It is said to bring fortune to those unlucky in love. Tourists also leave “letters to Juliet” on the wall next to the Juliet statue.
