How much does it cost for children to travel on Italian trains? Traveling by train in Italy is more than convenient and easy. Even regional trains are on time, as well as the national fast trains. Taking a train in Italy is the best option if you are a tourist visiting this magnificent country. And don’t worry, Italy is kid-friendly, you can easily take your offspring on train journeys with you. Seats are usually in a 2-2 or 4-4 configuration, those 4-seater benches with seats facing each other are especially ideal for families, such as the 6-seater cabins which can be closed by a sliding door. Regarding prices, the price structure is very easy for tickets für children in Italian Trains. There is a national general rule, which makes it easy to determine prices for the whole family.
Find here below an overview of example routes and prices for families, for either one adult and one child aged 4-11 years, as well as two adults and two children aged between 4 and 11.

General Price structure for children by Trenitalia

Trenitalia is the general national train operator in Italy. Most trains in Italy are operated by TrenItalia, or can be purchased via their website and ticket machines. Their rule for tickets prices for kids is the following:

Children aged 0-4 years (not yet reached) — FREE (if accompanied by an adult and not occupying a seat)

Children aged 4-11 years (not yet reached) — 50 % discount

Children above the age of 12 yearsFull price

Please pay attention to the special fares as mentioned below, as the discounts sometimes do not apply.

Example for ticket prices – one adult and one child / two adults two children

All prices are sourced from connections one month in advance, during the day, each taking the lowest price into consideration. Prices vary depending on the occupancy rate of the trains, and are one-way only.

Milan to Venice

ticket price for one adult and one child: 31,05 €
ticket price for two adults and two children: 61,10 €

Milan to Como

ticket price for one adult and one child: 7,20 €
ticket price for two adults and two children: 14,40 €

Rimini to Bologna

ticket price for one adult and one child: 14,80 €
ticket price for two adults and two children: 23,10 €

Bari to Monopoli

ticket price for one adult and one child: 6,80 €
ticket price for two adults and two children: 13,60 €

Rome to Florence

ticket price for one adult and one child: 31,90 € for the three hour journey, 41,90€ for the 1.5 hour journey
ticket price for two adults and two children: 53,40 € / 76,00 €

Rome to Naples

ticket price for one adult and one child: 19,00 €
ticket price for two adults and two children: 38,00 €

Naples to Salerno

ticket price for one adult and one child: 4,70 €
ticket price for two adults and two children: 9,40 €

Palermo to Cefalù

ticket price for one adult and one child: 9,40 €
ticket price for two adults and two children: 18,80 €

Catania to Messina

ticket price for one adult and one child: 12,60 €

Benefits for children on Trenitalia Trains

Valid on all regional trains except in the regions of Campania, Abruzzo and Sardinia and in the autonomous provinces of Trento and Bolzano:

FREE: up to 4 years not yet reached, accompanied by an adult and not occupying a seat.

50% DISCOUNT: from 4 to 12 years not yet reached.

FULL PRICE: over 12 years.

Abruzzo: free under one metre in height, accompanied by an adult and not occupying a seat.

Bolzano: free under 6 years and children residing in the province of BZ who have reached the age of 6 but are not yet attending compulsory school, always accompanied by a paying adult and not occupying a seat.

Campania: free under 6 years of age accompanied by a paying adult and not occupying a seat.

Lombardia: free up to 4 years not yet reached, accompanied by an adult and not occupying a seat; 50% discount: from 4 to 14 years not yet reached; full price over 14 years.

Puglia: Children up to the age of 10 travel free of charge if they are accompanied by an adult with a regular ticket; from the age of ten, no free tickets or reductions on the grounds of age are offered.

Sardinia: free under 6 years, if accompanied by an adult with a valid travel ticket, (subject to possession of proof of age in cases of dubious evidence); in this case, the person accompanying more than one child under 6 years must purchase a travel ticket at the appropriate full fare for every two (e.g. one child is free, two children – one full fare ticket, three children – one full fare ticket, four children – two full fare tickets, etc.).

Trento: free under 6 years accompanied by a paying adult (or holder of free tickets and passes for free movement) and with right to a seat, up to a maximum of 5 children under 6 years for each accompanying adult.

SPECIAL FARES

Lazio-Fiumicino Airport fare 1/Ter: children up to four years not yet reached travel free, provided they are accompanied by an adult with a valid travel ticket; children between 4 and 12 years not yet reached travel free if accompanied by an adult with a valid travel ticket; in this case, one child for each paying adult can travel free.

Fare 14 for urban/metropolitan areas: in the cities of Bari, Rome, Venice, Palermo and Turin, where Fare 14 for urban areas is in force, the reduction for children does not apply.
