Fried courgette flowers and truffle tagliatelle in Florence – Trattoria Zà Zà

Trattoria ZaZa is an absolute restaurant tip for Florence! Authentic Tuscan cuisine, good quality home cooking in elegant surroundings. You don’t have to be surprised about long queues in front of Trattoria ZaZa, but rather annoyed that you didn’t make a table reservation beforehand. One evening in September, I was lucky to quickly get a table at Zà Zà, as I was on my own looking for a delicious dinner. One of the advantages, of solo travel. I was quickly seated at a cat table in the corner of the terrace, and had an ideal starting point to watch the evening happenings in Florence. From the covered outdoor terrace, you have a view of the neighbouring Mercato, the market, which is also recommended for a detour or meal. But, sometimes you have to treat yourself and enjoy a dinner with white tablecloths. And truffles, truffles are something you should always treat yourself to in Florence anyway!

Table reservation necessary for Trattoria Zà Zà in Florence?

Is it necessary to book a table in advance for Trattoria Za Za in Florence? For evenings, definitely yes! At any given time in the evening, there are queues in front of the reception counter of the Tuscan restaurant. Tables are allocated from this counter, and you can also reserve a seat directly here for the evening or the following evening, for example. To make a reservation from out of town, it is advisable to call or request a reservation online. For short term requests (tonight, tomorrow night) it is recommended to call, for longer term requests you can also fill in the form on the website of the Tuscan restaurant in Florence. As the restaurant opens daily at 11am, reservations for lunch are not essential if you arrive at Zà Zà on time and between 11 – 12:30pm.

Delicious local Tuscan starters

Primi are always a delicious start to a successful dinner in Italy. First something for a starter to open the stomach, as well as often already side dishes, and then a protein-packed main course as a secondi. But, they are more than gracious with tourists and you can order whatever you like.

To start my Tuscan dinner in Florence, I opted for deep-fried courgette flowers. Not often available, I just had to strike here. The portion of “fresh fried courgette flowers” cost 7 euros at the time of my visit, and included a large portion of 8 deliciously fried flowers. These are eaten as they are, only salted. Absolutely delicious, this crispy (yet greasy) dish. The portion can be eaten alone if you are hungry enough, or shared.

Other starters and side dishes at ZaZa include rosemary potatoes, sweet green peppers with a ZaZa style sauce, cooked spinach with garlic, truffle bruschetta with fresh tomatoes or a porcini mushroom salad with parmesan and truffle dressing.

Enjoying truffles as a main course in Florence at Trattoria Za Za

Actually from the primi section of the truffle side of the menu at Trattoria Zá Zá, I opted for a portion of truffle pasta as my only main course. After such a delicious yet large starter, absolutely sufficient. The fresh tagliolini pasta with truffle sauce cost 16 euros. And worth every cent. Although it is a “first course“, the portion of thin tagliatelle pasta is large. After my delicious dinner at Trattoria Zà Zà in the Tuscan metropolis, I was definitely happy, and well satiated. I can more than recommend this restaurant in the centre of Florence!
