Pizza Fritte or Fried Pizza is a very special version of Pizza. To try good Pizza Fritte you should go to la Masardona in Napoli/Naples. The Location is not directly in the City Centre and when walking there you truly wonder if you are right, or in a completely different area. For more than 70 Years The Masardona is a Family Business, that sometimes attracts so many customers, you have to queue for it.
The Pizza Fritte by La Masardona in Napoli is prepared by topping one disk of pizza dough with buffalo ricotta, pork scratching, provolone, tomato sauce, pepper and basil before closing it with another disk, stretching and finally frying it for a bit. The Price for a Pizza Fritte is 4€, a smaller one costs 2€. For sure there are also other versions of this classic available. Each Pizza Fritte, or Fried Pizza, is prepared for each customer, therefore a bit waiting time has to be calculated. When entering their small places in Via Giulio Cesare Capaccio you first have order and pay what you like and then receive a waiting number. Once your number is called you give it the Chefs behind the glass window and you can follow their steps creating exactly your dish.
As the classic Pizza Fritte is with Pork or Ham, I went for a meat-free Fried Pizza with Ricotta, Provolone, Pepper, Tomato Sauce and Basil. For this, you have to order ‘Senza Cicoli’ (without pork). Otherwise, they are speaking and understanding English, in the end, you will definitely get what you want. And a few minutes later you have your fresh and hot Fried Pizza. You can either eat inside, but I ordered it for Take-Away, to eat it like real Street Food, on the Street. With no real clue on how to eat this filled fried dough, I started eating it bite by bite, from the Top to the Bottom. Unluckily most of the liquid filling squeezed out and it was quite a mess, but still tasty! With every bite, I had tomato and ricotta taste, and sometimes a bit provolone cheese. For just 2€ Pizza Fritta Napoletana is a perfect Street Food in Naples!
