If you are not from Germany and you see someone in a Dirndl, you might think this person is about to visit Oktoberfest or a similar bavarian-style Event. Nowadays everyone is wearing Dirndl, either more casual in a plaid pattern in plain colours or more fancy in noble materials and decent colours with pieces of jewellery. You can buy them for just a few euros online (while being made in China or India), or the real authentic ones. All over Bavaria, you can find Shops dedicated to Dirndl and authentic Bavarian costumes, Bavarian Trachten or Allgäuer Trachten. Just like with everything, every region has it’s different traditions. During my weekend getaway to Oberstaufen in the bavarian Allgäu, I visited ‘Trachten Strele’ to learn more about the origins of Allgäuer Trachten and the beginnings of Dirndl.
The clothing Store Trachten Strele is located in the city centre of Oberstaufen in the bavarian Allgäu. Either by Car or via Train (from Munich or Lindau), the Store is easily accessible. Family-run out of a passion for Trachten and Dirndl, this is quintessential for personal and detailed advice. Especially for women, and Trachten or Dirndl, you should definitely seek advice in a professional store. To highlight the right parts of a body you should buy a one that definitely fits you because a Dirndl should always flatter a woman.
Difference between Landhaus, Trachten and Dirndl
Looking (online) for Dirndl or bavarian costumes you might stumble across the words ‘Landhaus‘, ‘Trachten‘ and ‘Dirndl‘. Basically, it is about all the same, but also not exactly. To explain it easy and short, Trachten is the actual thing. They made the evolution from workwear to nowadays daywear. They are usually plain and functional, to say so. Anything with the word Landhaus is way more casual. Landhaus Fashion might be an embroidered white blouse or regular jeans, also embroidered. The combination of both, for females, is the Dirndl. A Dirndl Dress is more fashionable and chic than a Trachten Dress, but still way more acceptable than anything Landhaus. The Dirndl is available in various colours and also relies on Trends.
How to tie a Dirndl / meaning of the Dirndl ribbons
After you found a perfect Dirndl, the only complicated thing now is: How to tie a Dirndl. Don’t take this too easy, as it is very telling. If you tie the ribbon of your Dirndl on the right side, as seen from you, your relationship status is taken. The Ribbon on the left side means that you’re single, in the middle that you’re a virgin and in the back it is worn by widows. After you’re divorced the ribbon can be worn on the left side, again.
